Melbourne's comedy scene is stepping up for Venezuela. On Sunday 19 July, a lineup of the country's finest stand-up comedians will take the stage at Comic's Lounge for a special gala fundraiser, and the goal is simple: pack the room, dig deep, and raise as much money as we possibly can for earthquake relief. Every dollar from ticket sales goes directly to the cause.

The event is hosted by Ivan Aristeguieta, the beloved Venezuelan-Australian comedian who has become a familiar face on stages and screens across the country. For Ivan, this is personal. Bringing his trademark warmth and humour to the night, he leads a lineup of some of Australia's most talented comedians, all donating their time to the cause.

The bill features Dilruk Jayasinha, Dave Thornton, Kirsty Webeck, Ray O'Leary, He Huang, Daniel Connell and Bronwyn Kuss. Between them, the lineup brings together a Logie winner, multiple Melbourne International Comedy Festival award winners and nominees, and familiar faces from shows like Have You Been Paying Attention? and Taskmaster.

Why it matters

This is a period of grief and pain for our community. The earthquakes have caused devastation, and the loss has been felt deeply by Venezuelans here in Australia and back home. It is a sombre and heavy time.

But grief does not have to be carried alone. This gala is our way of coming together, offering a breath of fresh air in the middle of a devastating moment, and turning that pain into something that helps. Every ticket sold goes towards recovery. 100% of ticket sales will be donated to earthquake relief, so a night out becomes a direct act of solidarity.

We also want this to reach beyond our own community. This is a chance for the wider Australian community to stand alongside us, to bridge the gap, to support each other and to heal together. As Ivan and his fellow comedians know, laughter has a way of connecting people. There are few better reasons to gather than this one.

What to expect

Held in the intimate setting of Comic's Lounge, one of Melbourne's premier comedy venues, the gala offers a relaxed, warm atmosphere and a front-row seat to some of the best comedic talent in the country. Expect big laughs, great energy and a room full of people who have shown up for something bigger than themselves.

On the night there will also be a silent auction, and this is where the room can really open up its wallet. There will be some fantastic items to bid on, so bring your competitive streak and be ready to go big. Every bid drives the total higher, and every dollar goes straight to earthquake relief.

How you can help

This is a fundraiser first and foremost, and the number that matters most is the one we raise together on the night. Here is how you can make it count:

  • Buy a ticket, or a few. 100% of ticket sales are donated. Bring your friends, your family, your colleagues. A bigger room means a bigger contribution.
  • Bid big in the silent auction. Come ready to spend. Every bid is a donation, and a bit of friendly competition can go a long way.
  • Give generously on the night. If you are in a position to give beyond your ticket, please do. No amount is too small, and no amount is too big.

The people of Venezuela need real, tangible support right now. The more we raise, the more we can help families recover and rebuild. So come for the laughs, and come ready to give.
